Awareness and sensitization campaigns
As we deal with the epidemic, considering the vast millions of lives
involved, the long-term solution has to have its roots from the causes
of AIDS rather than its impact on the communities. As part of our
church effort to fight the problem, we engage in public education in
schools, churches and rural communities to deepen their awareness
about aids. This is implemented through training trainers who go to
communities to train other leaders, mass awareness through films shows
on large projector screens, music dance and drama etc. We also hold
intensive Training workshops for community volunteers who are very
resourceful during our trainings in the villages. And by publicly
engaging the community, stigma is overcome which is the major reason
communities have shied away from the fight associating AIDS with
immorality.
We have the Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) services
facilitation program where we encourage and facilitate people to go
for testing in order to know their sero status. Most people would
rather convince themselves that they are HIV than take a test to
verify for fear of positive results. They prefer staying on
assumptions rather than knowing the truth about their status. We
facilitate them with basic counseling and offer transportation to the
health centers where testing is done and cover their costs at the
centers. We also train our volunteers in basic counseling skills to
equip them to reach the community with more skilled readiness.
MOBILE CLINIC
We have instituted a drugs distribution program whereby people living
with HIV/AIDS attain drugs. We primarily distribute drugs, which help
alleviate pain and those that help fight opportunistic infections. The
PLWHAS mostly those who live in the rural areas which are special
places of OURKIDS-Uganda interest are able to get drugs which they
can't access because of their location and economic standard.
We offer referral services for cases that are beyond our handling
especially those that require a CD4 count test to prove if they
qualify to be on ARVs.
